The Sick Need Medicine: A Message For Those Who Want Help
We all get sick from time to time. Most of our homes have a medicine cabinet or drawer that is at all times ready for bouts of illness, whether it be the common cold, allergies, or something worse. Before taking these medicines, what is our thought process? We likely have a confident expectation that the medicine is going to help with our sickness. This can be for a few reasons:
We all get sick from time to time. Most of our homes have a medicine cabinet or drawer that is at all times ready for bouts of illness, whether it be the common cold, allergies, or something worse. Before taking these medicines, what is our thought process? We likely have a confident expectation that the medicine is going to help with our sickness. This can be for a few reasons:
- We believe that doctors have done their due diligence to research the medicine.
- We believe that doctors and scientists have done their due diligence to test the medicine.
- We believe that other people have had good results from taking the medicine.
- We have been given the medicine by someone that we trust, therefore we have increased belief it will work.
There may be other reasons in addition to these that help us make the decision to take a medicine. This progression of logic, whether done consciously or unconsciously, can be applied from the most simple to the most deadly illness. It can also be applied to our emotional wellness. We seek peace of mind and emotional comfort in various ways, such as meditation, crystals, marijuana, alcohol, sex, etc. The bottom line is that we want help, and try various means to get it. What’s interesting, however, is that the sicker, more pained, or depressed we become, the more likely we are to take risks, and seek many different ways of healing.
During treatment, we really have no tangible idea as to how we are being healed, besides what the doctors explain to the best of their knowledge. We just have a hope that a process of healing is occurring. We will take a pill. Inject a fluid in our veins. Put on a cream. Sit in salt water. Stand in below freezing temperatures. Have people wave herbs and plants over our bodies. Stick needles all over our bodies. Do exercises. And countless other practices….all in an attempt to get better. Yet, why is it that when presented with the Gospel of Jesus Christ being the Savior of mankind, the ultimate Healer, able to cleanse us of sin and heal our body, soul, and spirit, we think it’s outlandish? There are certainly individualistic factors that hinder belief, but let’s stick with the aforementioned logical processes:
- Do we believe that people have done their due diligence in researching who Jesus is?
- Do we believe that people have tested out the deity and validity of Jesus?
- Do we see that other people have had good results after believing in and trying Jesus?
- Is someone we trust telling us about Jesus?
Ponder on these questions for a second. Furthermore, ponder on the diligence you take before popping an Advil or downing Robitussin, as it regards these 4 points. How quick are you to take a medicine without much thought? How diligent is your research before taking a medicine? Probably little to none. It is an interesting thing that the majority of us are very quick to be extensive in what we’ll try for physical healing, but when someone we trust professes a cure for emotional/mental/physical/spiritual healing, we reject it. Logically, why the inconsistency? Why not try something that many people have researched and said works? Why not try what a friend tells you is the best product on the market, which is God who created all things?
If you’re wavering in your faith in Jesus Christ, or are unbelieving, I’m asking you to simply try Him out. Place the same expectation in Him that you would in your medicine or other healing practice. Just as a doctor prescribes treatment that last over a few days or weeks, in this same way ask Jesus to show Himself to you day by day, week by week. Speak to Him out loud or in your deep thoughts. Tell Him you want to rely on Him for what you need. Tell Him you’re having a hard time believing in Him, and you’d like Him to help your unbelief. Then, be still, be alert, and expect Him to reveal Himself.
